The advice from NESTA was to concentrate on 'time out' for the first few months. Meet. Discuss. Appraise new ideas and reconsider old ones.

The academic programme of lectures and visits has covered places as diverse as Cambridge, Cardiff, Canterbury and California which - apart from being dangerously allietrative - is pretty diverse.

Now research programmes are beginning to emerge. The environmental scanning microscopes at Cambridge offer much inspiration. There are areas of interest in plant physiology, the role of the single cell in modelling human affairs, and even in the mechanisms of blood coagulation.

There's a summary of the progress so far for the first six months. More will follow . . .
