Geothermal power is widely ignored elsewhere too. The Hadley Centre specialises in global warming and research to minimise it. On the left is a page from the Hadley, and ‘geothermal’ is entered into the search box. The frame (below) shows the answer: ‘no documents found’. If these official bodies are not considering geothermal energy, new effort are needed to bring it into the loop.
Hydro power is viable in nations like Norway, where waterfalls are abundant, though of more limited value in the UK. There is no mention in the DTI figures of tidal power, either, which I first witnessed in the 1970s on the River Rance in Normandy. Wind power, a present-day enthusiasm, depends on unrealistic levels of subsidy. Photovoltaic cells are useful in local small-scale applications (to power parking meters, for example). I believe that national authorities should look urgently at the inexhaustible energy supply that lies beneath our feet.
