Construction of operational prototype

Experiments with optical fibre illumination

Laser light has been ducted to the specimen wells by means of optical fibre. These demonstrations illustrate the solution proposed.

Lasers (1) Lasers (2)

There are four fibres, fused to form one at the delivery point of the light from the laser. They were set onto a calibrated transparent template to ensure a common focus and set in polymerising resin. These views show the appearance of the delivery system for the laser light .

Unit Close-up

The appearance of the final prototype is shown (above left). In close-up (above right) the optical fibre array can be seen in juxtaposition with the transparent culture wells, where it provuides an effective dark-ground illumination system. If LED's are substituted, image contrast can be increased electronically.
